One Year With the Homebody Sofa: My Honest Review

Design, April 4, 2025

Shopping for a new sofa is no small task—especially for a self-proclaimed homebody like me! We spend a lot of time on our couch (no shame!), so when we bought our new home, a comfortable sofa was at the very top of the list. After seeing a few ads for Homebody sofas on social media, I was immediately intrigued. An attractive reclining sofa?! Sign me up!

Curious to learn more, I reached out to the brand to see if they’d be interested in a partnership. We were beyond excited when they agreed! Now, after a full year of daily use, I’m sharing my honest Homebody sofa review—from comfort and design to durability and overall value. While there are some standout features I genuinely love, there are also some drawbacks that would make me think twice before making such a big investment.

Disclaimer: This sofa was generously gifted to me as part of a brand partnership. However, all thoughts and opinions in this review are completely my own.

From Ordering to Unboxing

One of the biggest wins with Homebody was the ordering and delivery process! Ordering is very straightforward. Their website is beautifully done and easy to navigate, making the ordering process incredibly easy! They have all sorts of customization options to choose from! This is the exact sofa we went with 🙂

We were shocked with how quickly our sofa delivered, just a couple weeks after placing the order! Looking on their website now, the same sofa would ship in 5-7 weeks. That’s definitely longer than a year ago, but still much quicker than many other furniture brands. You can either do curbside delivery (free), in-home delivery ($200), or white glove delivery ($400). Learn more about those options here.

The sofa gets delivered in multiple boxes which is nice!! The recliner boxes were definitely the heaviest, but the rest were pretty manageable. Assembly was really simple too! My husband was injured so we had a friend come over to help me set it up, but I probably could’ve done it without him with the exception of getting the recliner pieces in place.

The fact that it came in separate modular pieces was a plus— no special tools were required and it only took us only one hour to assemble! You simply attach the pieces using the provided u-shaped connectors and brackets. It would be relatively easy to move if needed!

Design and Aesthetic

Visually, the Homebody Sofa is stunning. You would never even guess that they recline! The clean lines, subtle leather stitching along the edges, and modern silhouette give it a high-end feel. It’s the kind of sofa that looks beautiful in a styled living room, and I can see why its so appealing to design lovers!

We went with the coconut linen fabric for a clean, classic look. They also have five other fabric selections to choose from, all of which are neutral. Hopefully they’ll offer more color options eventually, because I personally love a bold color sofa! From left to right: Shell (pet-friendly), Velvet Marshmallow, Velvet Evening Fog, Velvet Warm Sand, and Linen Gloomy Day In.

One design detail I don’t love is the flaps on the front of the seat cushions. They tend to look sloppy if you don’t smooth them out daily. I wish they had a cleaner look!

Comfort and Functionality

Now, let’s talk about comfort. The reclining feature is of course a game changer. And it only requires two inches of clearance from the wall, making it a great space-saving option! When it’s fully reclined, you’ll need about 22″ between the couch and your coffee table.

The adjustable ergonomic headrest is another fantastic feature—it clicks forward (this my favorite!!) and moves up and down 3″, allowing for customizable support whether you’re sitting upright or reclining.

However, it’s not the easiest to move up and down. You can’t do it while sitting because you need two hands and it takes some effort to get each rod even. My husband also pinched his skin adjusting it a couple times too 🙁

Each seat cushion measures about 30″ (seat depth) x 40″ (seat width) which means one cushion can totally fit two people! I personally like having deep seats so I can comfortably sit cross-legged! I’d say the seat cushions are on the firmer side, so if you prefer a plush, sink-in feel, the Homebody sofa may not be the right fit for you.

The back cushions are filled with a hypoallergenic down alternative. They’re pretty comfortable, but they lose their structure really quickly so they have to be fluffed up daily!

Reclining Mechanism Issues

While I love the reclining functionality, there are some major drawbacks that I need to point out:

It Has to Be Plugged In – Because it’s a power recliner, you’ll need to position the sofa near an outlet, which limits placement options. We got the two seats with two recliners and each recliner has to be plugged in independently so we use a power strip behind ours.

The Middle Seat Reclining Button – In addition to the remotes, there’s hidden buttons in the middle and side of the couch that also activate the reclining feature. Whenever I sit anywhere towards the middle of the sofa, I always accidentally activate the middle button which is both annoying and potentially unsafe.

Concerns for Pets – Our cats are always very interested in going underneath the sofa when it’s reclined. This wouldn’t be as big of an issue if it weren’t for those middle buttons under the seat. It makes us nervous that we’ll sit on it when they’re underneath. As a result, we often refrain from using the recliner aspect. This is a huge bummer since it’s the main reason we wanted the Homebody sofa in the first place 🙁

Durability and Maintenance

Fabric Quality

At first glance, I was really happy with the look and feel of the fabric. Unfortunately, within just a few months, it started pilling. For a premium-priced piece of furniture like this, I expected the fabric to hold up better over time. Hopefully some of their other upholstery options hold up better than the linen!

For my fellow cat owners, I also wanted to share how the sofa has held up to cat claws. I’m sharing the worst area- the rest has held up pretty well ultimately. We use a fabric shaver tool every so often to control this! Linen, in general, is not the best option when you have cats so that’s on us!

We recently got a velvet sofa in our sunroom and they don’t have any interest in scratching that thankfully! I think one of the velvet fabric Homebody options, or perhaps the pet-friendly option, would be the best for those with cats 🙂

On the plus side, it’s so nice to have washable cushions! But just a note: only the linen and pet-friendly fabrics can go in the washing machine, while the velvet needs dry cleaning. Here’s more information on how to wash the cushions!

Structural Concerns

The sofa’s overall structure leaves something to be desired. My biggest issue is with the armrests. They’re held in place by just one bracket which makes them feel really flimsy. In my opinion, there should be two brackets per arm rest for strong and even support, especially which such a high price tag.

Features and Extras

The Homebody Sofa includes some thoughtful extra features that I love:

  • USB Charging Ports – Super convenient for charging devices while lounging! We use this all the time.
  • Storage Pockets – Perfect for storing the remotes or keeping small accessories within reach.

Pros and Cons

Here’s a quick summary of our Homebody sofa review, what we’ve loved—and what’s fallen short:

Pros

  • Beautiful design – Clean lines, leather edge stitching, and a modern silhouette that hides the fact it reclines.
  • Easy delivery and assembly process – Arrived quickly, came in manageable boxes, and only took about an hour to set up.
  • Reclines with just 2″ of clearance – A great space-saver for tighter rooms.
  • Ergonomic headrest – Offers added comfort and support for your neck.
  • Modular and easy to move – Simple to disassemble and reconfigure if needed.
  • Removable cushion covers – Especially helpful for homes with pets or kids.
  • Built-in USB ports – Super handy for keeping devices charged.
  • Hidden storage pockets – Great for remote controls and other small items.

Cons

  • Fabric pills quickly – The linen fabric started showing wear after only a few months.
  • Flimsy armrests – Only secured by a single bracket, which makes them feel unstable.
  • Reclining button placement – The hidden button in the middle seat often activates by accident when someone sits down.
  • Not pet-friendly – Our cats love hiding underneath, and the reclining mechanism feels risky with pets around.
  • Has to be plugged in – Limits where you can place the sofa, especially in open layouts.
  • Back cushions lose shape quickly – They need frequent fluffing to stay looking structured.
  • Seat flaps can look messy – The front flaps on the seat cushions tend to look sloppy without daily attention.

Final Verdict: Is the Homebody Sofa Worth It?

After a year of living with the Homebody sofa, I can confidently say there are features we truly enjoy—especially the sleek design, reclining functionality, and thoughtful extras like USB ports and storage pockets. It looks beautiful in our space and offers a level of comfort that’s great for everyday lounging.

However, there are also some pretty significant drawbacks I can’t ignore—particularly the fabric pilling, flimsy armrests, and pet safety concerns. For a sofa at this price point, I expected better durability and a sturdier overall build.

Since this piece was gifted as part of a brand partnership, I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to try it. But if I had paid full price out of pocket, I think I’d feel pretty disappointed.

Would I recommend the Homebody sofa? That depends. If design and reclining comfort are your top priorities, and you don’t have pets who like to crawl underneath, it might be a great fit for you. But if you’re looking for something ultra-durable and pet-friendly, or want a sofa that can be placed anywhere in a room—not just against a wall—you may want to keep shopping.

I hope this honest Homebody sofa review helps you make the best decision for your home and lifestyle!
