A couple years ago Dan and I went to the beach for the weekend with a couple friends. We decided it would be fun to have the girls in charge of dinner one night, and the boys the other. Do you ever do that? If not, I highly recommend it! It’s so fun! Anyway, Dan and our friend TJ ended up making these sloppy Joe sliders and I must say… us girls were impressed!! They were just so delicious and flavorful.
This quickly became a regular meal in our house. Dan has really perfected the recipe and feels proud whenever he makes them. We usually have most of the ingredients on hand. Actually, we started keeping tomato sauce on hand simply because of this recipe.
Is anyone else obsessed with these Hawaiian sweet rolls? I will find just about any excuse to use them. We tried this recipe once with some different slider rolls but it just wasn’t the same.
The glaze for this is optional but it’s probably my favorite part. It adds another layer of flavor and it gives something for the sesame seeds to stick to!
Sloppy Joe Sliders
Ingredients
Sloppy Joes
- 1 package Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup onion finely chopped
- 8 oz tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp mustard
- 2 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tbsp white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
For the Glaze
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dijon mustard
- 2 Tbsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Brown the ground beef in a large skillet.
- Once the meat is browned, drain grease and set aside.
- Add the 2 Tbsp butter over medium heat and saute the onions until transparent.
- Stir in all the remaining sloppy joes ingredients, bring to a boil, and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Be sure to use a splatter screen!
- Add the ground beef back in and stir until it's reheated.
- Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, leaving the 12 rolls intact.
- Place the bottom half of the rolls in a 9×13 casserole dish.
- Spoon the mixture onto the bottom half of the rolls and then add the top half.
For the Glaze
- Melt butter in a small bowl
- Stir in brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, and mustard.
- Brush the glaze over the sliders
- Sprinkle sesame seeds on top
- Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
